Everything about Hip-hop Connection totally explained

Pre-2000

Hip-Hop Connection (HHC) magazine was launched in the UK in 1988. At the time the Editor was Chris Hunt. It is now the world's longest running hip-hop publication. It comes out once a month with a hundred and something full colour pages of articles, interviews, reviews and adverts. Prior to the first issue, the 'Hip-Hop Connection' was a premium rate 0898 telephone number run by now BBC Radio 1 DJ Dave Pearce] that invited MCs to call up and record their own rhyme after listening to the best rhyme of the previous week. HHC was owned by Music Maker Publishing throughout the early 90's until Music Maker was acquired by Future Publishing.

Post-2000

Future Publishing sold the title to Ministry of Sound in 2000. The first Ministry issue featured Mariah Carey on the front cover to the chagrin of many of it's harcore readers. Ministry tried to continue with its 'female artists only' cover policy which had proved successful for their dance magazine but after Kelis and Lauryn Hill they realised it was going to be difficult as they were rapidly running out of suitable female artists. Ministry sold the title after one year to a company formed by the editor and designers. HHC has gained international recognition and was described by Chuck D as "the best magazine in the world". They have interviewed everyone who is anyone in hip-hop ranging from Eminem, Nas, Jay-Z, 50 Cent, Ice T, Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Jazzy Jeff, KRS-One, Lauryn Hill and many more.

Current

Today the magazine is independently owned and published by Infamous Ink Limited. The Editor is Andy Cowan, the Deputy Editor is Phillip Mlynar. Contributors include James McNally, Martin Cook, David Houghton, DJ Yoda, Andrew Emery, Kid Acne, Dan Greenpeace, Adam Anonymous, Doyen D, Harris Pilton, DJ Excalibah and Jared LeftLion.
